Heavy Haulage
Plant, machinery and abnormal loads moved UK-wide. Long loads, low-loaders, escort vehicles when needed.

Nationwide Heavy Haulage
AC Lifting moves heavy, oversized and abnormal loads across the UK. Whether it’s a standard heavy load on a flat trailer or a full abnormal indivisible load (AIL) that needs notifications, escorts and route planning, we handle the transport, the paperwork and the lifting at either end.
What counts as heavy haulage?
In UK transport law, “heavy haulage” covers anything over the standard 44-tonne gross weight limit, anything wider than 2.9m, anything longer than 18.65m, or any indivisible load that can’t be broken down for transport. Typical examples include plant machinery, prefabricated buildings, tanks, vessels and large steel fabrications.
What’s included
- Route planning and site access surveys.
- STGO (Special Types General Order) notifications to police, highways and bridge authorities where required.
- Escort vehicles for oversize movements.
- Loading and unloading — our HIAB fleet can lift and place at both ends on most jobs.
- Operating insurance cover and goods-in-transit insurance.
When heavy haulage meets HIAB
A big advantage of booking AC Lifting for heavy haulage is that we don’t just drop the load at the kerb. Our HIAB fleet means we can lift and position the load at destination — saving you hiring a separate crane or mobile lift. For loads outside HIAB reach we arrange crane backup or book you in as a contract lift.
Common questions
Do you need a permit for an abnormal load?
Yes. Anything over standard weight or dimension limits requires STGO notifications at least two clear working days before the move, and some routes need specific approvals from Highways England, Network Rail or local authorities. We handle all of this as part of the job.
What’s the heaviest load you move?
Our in-house fleet handles loads up to the capacity of our largest HIAB-equipped trucks. For heavier or more complex jobs we partner with specialist abnormal-load hauliers and co-ordinate the full operation including the lifting at either end. Send us your load specifics and we’ll come back with the right plan.
Do you handle the route planning?
Yes. For any abnormal load we plan the route ourselves — height clearances, weight-restricted bridges, width constraints — and file all the required notifications. You don’t need to interface with police or highways yourself.
Can you deliver direct to site?
Yes. We specialise in point-to-point moves — fabricator to site, depot to depot, yard to yard — with lifting and placing handled at either end wherever our HIABs can reach. No need to arrange separate contractors for the unload.
